Proficiency testing programs for calibration and dimensional inspection laboratories
HN Proficiency Testing, Inc. offers calibration and dimensional inspection proficiency tests across multiple disciplines. We hold A2LA accreditation and require participants to calculate uncertainties using ISO GUM methodology at k=2 or 95% coverage level.
Chemical Calibration
PH1 - pH Meter
Participants measure deviations in an Oaktron pH 150 meter across a range of 4-10 pH. The reference uncertainty is on the order of 0.01 pH.
Dimensional Calibration
AB1 - Angle Blocks
The artifacts are a set of steel angle blocks (30°, 45°, 60°, 90°) with reference uncertainties typically on the order of 14 arc seconds.
AN2 - Protractor
The artifact is a digital protractor measuring 0°-90° clockwise and counterclockwise, with reference uncertainties of 3-4 arc minutes.
GB1 - Gage Blocks
The artifacts are 10 steel gage blocks and one ceramic gage block (0.0625-2 inches and 100 mm). The reference uncertainties are typically on the order of (2.5 + 0.8L) µin, where L is the nominal length in inches.
GB2 - Long Gage Blocks
The artifacts are three steel gage blocks (8-20 inches). The reference uncertainties are typically on the order of (3 + 1L) µin.
HE1 - Height Gage
The artifact is a 12-inch digital height gage. The reference uncertainties are primarily limited by the resolution of the artifact.
HG1 - Hand Gages #1
The artifacts are a 25-50mm micrometer, a 0-6 inch caliper, and a 0-0.5 inch digital indicator. The reference uncertainties are primarily limited by the resolution of the artifacts.
HG2 - Hand Gages #2
The artifacts are a 0-1 inch micrometer with spherical anvils, a 0-6 inch digital caliper, and a ±30µm dial indicator. The reference uncertainties are primarily limited by the resolution of the artifacts.
MS1 - Micrometer Master (Setting) Rods
The artifacts are a set of 1-12 inch setting rods. The reference uncertainties are typically on the order of 25 µin to 75 µin.
OF1 - Optical Flat
The artifact is a two-inch diameter double-sided optical flat. The reference uncertainty is on the order of 3 µin.
PG1 - Plain Plug Gages
The artifacts are a set of six 0.1-1.5 inch plug gages for OD measurements. The reference uncertainties are typically on the order of 10-20 µin.
RG1 - Ring Gages
The artifacts are a set of three 0.25-4 inch ring gagesfor OD measurements. The reference uncertainties are typically on the order of 10-20 µin.
SF1 - Surface Finish
The artifact has three surfaces (0.1-3 µm Ra) for measuring Ra and Rz at specified cutoffs. The reference uncertainties are typically on the order of 0.003 µm to 0.3 µm depending on the surface and the parameter.
SP2 - Surface Plate
The artifact is a 12-by-18-inch surface plate. The measurands are the heights at specific points in the Union Jack surface map and the repeat reading of the plate. The reference uncertainties are typically on the order of 20 µin to 40 µin.
SR1 - Steel Rule
The artifact is a 12-inch steel rule with dual graduations (1/50" and 1/100"). The reference uncertainties are typically on the order of .0003 in to .0005 in.
TP1 - Thread Plug Gages
The artifacts are a set of four double ended thread plugs, two metric and two inch plugs between 2 mm and 1.5 inches. The measurands are the major and pitch diameters. The reference uncertainties are typically on the order of 30-100 μin.
TW1 - Thread Wires
The artifacts are four sets of three thread wires across a 6-48 TPI range (0.01-0.1 inches). The measurands are the effective diameters and the wire constants. The reference uncertainties are typically on the order of 5 μin.
Electrical Calibration
CL1 - Clamp Meter
The artifact is a Fluke 376 FC clamp meter.
This program involves sourcing:
DC Current (10 A – 975 A);
AC Current (100 A - 975 A at 50 Hz).;
The associated reference uncertainties are on the order of:
0.22 A – 5.6 A DC;
0.64 A - 5 A AC.
CP1 - Decade Capacitor
The artifact is a decade Capacitor with a range of 1000 pF to 1 µF range.
DMM8 / DMM10 - Digital Multimeter
These are identical tests using Keysight 34465a 6½ digit DMMs as artifacts.
This program involves sourcing:
DC Volts (50 mV – 750 V);
DC Current (80 mA – 1.9 A);
DC Resistance (1 kOhm – 10 MOhm);
AC Volts (1V – 500V at 100 Hz – 50 kHz);
AC Current (1 A - 1.9 A at 1 kHz;
Capacitance (10nF - 10 µf);
Frequency (30 Hz - 290 kHz).
The associated reference uncertainties are on the order of:
0.0035 mV – 0.009 V DC;
0.007 mA – 0.82 mA DC;
30 mOhm – 350 Ohm;
0.22 mV – 88 mV AC;
0.4 mA - 0.9 mA AC;
0.02 nF - 0.4 µF;
0.4 mHz - 3 Hz.
MW4 - Microwave Attenuator Calibration
The artifacts are four Agilent 8491B attenuators (-3 to -20 dB attenuation) The measurands are attenuation and VSWR at 300 MHz to 18 GHz. The reference uncertainties are typically on the order of 0.05-0.15 dB for attenuation and 0.007-0.02 for VSWR.
OC1 - Oscilloscope
The artifacts is a Tektronix TBS 1202C. The measurands include Calibration addressing DC gain, vertical bandwidth, time base deviation, and vertical position deviation.
RE1 - Resistance Measurement
The artifacts are three IET Labs SRX standard resistors (10 Ohm, 1.9 kOhm, 1 MOhm). The reference uncertainties are typically on the order of 10 ppm.
RF1 - RF Power Sensor Calibration
The artifacts is an Agilent 8481A power sensor. The measurands are the calibration factors at 1 mW (50 MHz reference) between 10 MHz and 18 GHz. The reference uncertainties are typically on the order of 1.5%.
TS6 / TS8 - Temperature Simulation / Process Calibrator
These are identical tests using Fluke 724's as artifacts. The measurands include sourcing simulated input from thermocouples type J, K, T, and 3-wire RTDs, as well as sourcing DC Voltage (80 mV to 24 V), DC current (4 mA to 20 mA) and resistance (50 Ohms to 700 Ohms). The reference uncertainties are typically on the order of 0.07°C to 0.15°C for the temperature simulations and are primarily limited by the resolution of the artifact for the pure electrical measurements.
VA2 - Volt and Ampere Measurement
The artifact is a Yokogawa 2553A calibrator.
This program involves measuring:
DC Volts (5 mV – 29 V);
DC Current (0.4 mA – 90 mA).
The associated reference uncertainties are on the order of:
1.2 µV – 0.3 mV;
0.6 µA – 5 µA.
Physical Calibration
DO1 - Durometer Calibration
The artifact is a Pacific Transducer Durometer with test points in the range of 10 to 90 Duro (indication at known force), as well as Tip Extension, Rod Diameter, Tip Angle and Tip Diameter.
Reference uncertainties are typically on the order of 0.3 Duro, 0.0002 inches and 0.1°.
FG3 - Force Gage - Tension/Compression
The artifact is a 4400 lbs Imada force gage with a separate loadcell. Test points include both compression and tension.
FG4 - Force Gage - Tension/Compression
The artifact is a 110 lbs Imada force gage with an integrated loadcell. Test points include both compression and tension.
HR2 - Rockwell C Hardness
The artifacts are a set of three Rockwell C hardness blocks.
The test is directly suitable for participants who calibrate Rockwell C hardness blocks. Indirectly, it can also be used for participants who calibrate Rockwell C hardness testers.
MA2 - Mass Measurement
The artifacts are a set of 12 ASTM class 3 weights in the range of 1 g to 500 g.
Reference uncertainties are typically on the order of 1.7 µg to 26 µg.
PR5 - Pressure Gage Calibration
The artifact is a pressure gage with test points in the range of 1000 to 8000 psi. Reference uncertainties are primarily limited by the resolution of the artifact (1 psi).
PR8 - Pressure Gage Calibration
The artifact is a pressure gage with test points in the range of 50 to 1000 psi. Reference uncertainties are primarily limited by the resolution of the artifact (0.1 psi).
PV4 - Pressure and Vacuum Combination Gage Calibration
The artifact is a combination gauge with test points in the range of -14 to +30 psi. Reference uncertainties are primarily limited by the resolution of the artifact (0.01 psi).
TQ2 / TQ3 - Torque Wrench Calibration
These packages are identical and each uses 2 digital torque wrenches as artifacts with test points in the range of 25 lbf-in to 100 lbf-ft.
Reference uncertainties are typically on the order of 0.5% - 1.5% of reading.
TT1 - Torque Transducer Calibration
The artifact is a Mountz torque transducer with test points in the range of 10 to 50 lbf-ft
Reference uncertainties are typically on the order of 0.1% of reading.
Temperature Calibration
HU7 - Humidity - No Salt
The artifact is a Vaisala humidity sensor with test points in the range of 20%-90% RH.
Reference uncertainties are typically on the order of 1% RH.
This sensor cannot be calibrated using saturated salts.
TE2 - IR Thermometer
The artifact is a Fluke 68 infrared thermometer with test points in the range of 0°C to 600°C.
Reference uncertainties are typically on the order of 0.5°C to 2°C.
TE3 / TE9 - 1/4" PRT Thermometer
These packages are largely identical and each uses a Fluke 5616 PRT with 1523 readout as the artifact. Test points are in the range of -30°C to +300°C.
Reference uncertainties are on the order of 0.02°C to 0.04°C.
Note: If you are not used to handling fragile PRTs or your uncertainty is more than 0.5°C, please select TE8 instead.
TE8 - Type K Thermocouple Thermometer Calibration
The artifact is a type K thermocouple with Fluke 51 II readout with test points in the range of 100°F to 482°F (38°c to 250°C).
Reference uncertainties are on the order of 0.2°F to 0.6°F.
Time & Frequency Calibration
FQ2 - Frequency Measurement
The artifact is a Novus GPS Disciplined 10 MHz oscillator.
Note:The oscillator's GPS antenna need a clear view of the sky, for example through a window, to achieve GPS lock and meet the reference uncertainty of about 0.25 mHz
SW1 - Stop Watch
The artifact is a Traceable Products Stopwatch. The measurand is the 24h deviation.
TM1 - Optical Tachometer (Frequency) Calibration
The artifact is an Extech tachometer with optical test points in the range of 30 RPM to 95,000 RPM.
Reference uncertainties are primarily limited by the resolution (0.1 or 1 RPM depending on test point).
Dimensional Inspection
DI1 - 1D Dimensional Inspection
The artifacts are steel blocks, pins, rods and a ring in the range of 0.2-4 inches. Intended to be measured with hand tools.
Reference uncertainties are typically on the order of 3-20 µin.
DI2 - 2D Dimensional Inspection
The artifact is a steel block (~150×100×35mm). The measurands are hole and pin diameters, locations and distances.
Reference uncertainties are typically on the order of 2-3 µm.
This test is primarily intended for optical CMMs, microscopes, and optical comparators.
